Honda has dominated Indy Car racing since 2004, when it powered 14 of 16 race winners, swept the Indianapolis 500 and claimed the first three spots in the drivers’ championship. It only got worse for the competition and, by 2006, there was no engine manufacturer left to try and challenge the Big H. So, Honda has been the lone engine competing in the Indy Racing League for the past three seasons, but that’s not what Honda Performance Development is all about. In a roundtable hosted by IndyCar officials, big hitters like Audi, BMW, Fiat, Volkswagen, Mazda and Chevrolet came to Indy to explore the possibility of joining the IndyCar Series. Engine builders Cosworth, John Judd, Ilmor, Speedway Engines and AER were also in attendance.

At Mid-Ohio a few weeks ago an old friend from the CART/Champ Car days observed - with more than a hint of condescension - one reason the American Le Mans Series has developed a fair degree of momentum is that “with four classes, everybody gets to win. If we’d run Formula Atlantic and Champ Cars together we’d have had 35- and 40-car grids, too.”

A couple of NJ riders tried their luck North of the Border at Round 8 of the Monster Energy CMRC Motocross Nationals. This past weekend’s event was held at the Sand Del Lee track in Munster, Ontario, Canada. In MX2 class action Freehold Honda backed Bobby Jimenez (Browns Mills) went 18-dnf for 23rd overall while Mt Holly Racing teammates Bryan Wallace and Ryan Gainey did battle in the MX1 class. Wallace went 13-15 for 15th overall and Gainey finished 19-19 for 20th overall. Wallace is now 26th while Gainey is 29th in the overall points stndings.

Nicky Hayden

Nicky Hayden

Nicky Hayden, is likely to miss out on this weekend’s Czech Republic Moto GP, after injuring his foot at the recent X Games event in Los Angeles.

Hayden landed badly whilst performing a jump in a Supermoto event, and injured the heel of his right foot, which he has been advised to rest until the San Marino GP at the end of the month.

Hayden said,

“I certainly feel bad about it for my team and I apologise.  I had their permission to do the Supermoto thing.  I just wanted to do some riding during the break, have some fun, and I thought that maybe It’d give me a little spark for the rest of the season, but it backfired on me.”

It is the second race in concession that the Honda team have been unable to produce a full line-up, after Dani Pedrosa withdrew from the US Grand Prix when his injuries made it too uncomfortable for him to ride.

Pedrosa, is hoping to rejoin the action at the Czech Republic after resting and rehabilitating his finger and wrist injuries.

Pedrosa is now 41 points behind the championship leader, Valentino Rossi, but he is determined to get back to the top.

Pedrosa said,

“I hope I can have a good race at Brno to start the second part of the championship in the best possible way. It’s the kind of circuit that demands a gentle, fine riding style, you don’t need to be aggressive when taking the corners.  It has just been resurfaced, so we will have to wait and see what the grip is like.  The atmosphere is always great with a big enthusiastic crowd on race day. “

Will the fourth time be the charm for Lucas Luhr? Audi’s German factory driver certainly hopes so. Luhr earned his fourth career pole position at Road America on Friday and was the fastest overall qualifier for the Generac 500 presented by Time Warner Cable. His lap of 1:46.935 (136.277 mph) gave him a 0.41-second margin over Andretti Green Racing’s Franck Montagny.

Scott Dixon took another step toward the championship by winning the pole today for the Meijer Indy 300 presented by Pepsi and Edy’s at sold out Kentucky Speedway. Dixon earned his fifth PEAK Motor Oil Pole Award of the season (sixth pole start overall based on entrant points at Iowa Speedway) with a four-lap cumulative time of 1 minute, 37.3293 seconds (218.968 mph average) on the 1.5-mile oval to deny Vitor Meira of his first pole start since June 2004.
